"Grass Roots: African Origins of an American Art"

Info: On display at the Coastal Discovery Museum, Honey Horn, Hilton Head Island. The exhibit traces the histories of coiled basketry in Africa and America and explores the evolution of an ancient art with Lowcountry ties. In conjunction, the museum will also offer the following programs: "Grass Roots: The Exhibition and the Inspiration" by Dr. Dale Rosengarten and Nakia Wigfall (Sept. 14); "Sharing the Penn School Experience" by Rosalyn Browne, Director of History and Culture at the Penn Center (Oct. 12); "Habitat and Biology of Basket-Making Materials" with Laura Lee Rose, Horticulture Extension Agent at Clemson (Nov. 16) and "Sweetgrass Basket Making" with a local Gullah basket maker (Sept. 24, Oct. 8 and Nov. 11).

Beaufort Road Rally for the Arts
When/Where: 3 p.m. Oct. 9 in Beaufort Town Center
Info: A benefit for ARTworks . The starting line is ARTworks in Beaufort Town Center, and it's your job to find the finish line/party per the rally directions. Drive a pre-set course in this non-race to find the finishing line party. This is not a race; you will be penalized for going too fast (or too slow!) Your times, mileage, and various other scoring categories will be totaled at the finish line, where a party awaits for all who Rally for the Arts – including trophies for the winners, food, drinks (including a donation bar of beer and wine), music, prize raffle, and, of course, stories from the road.

Info: These art classes for ages 2-5 are designed to help children develop fine motor skills and encourage creativity through the visual arts. Museum seeks local sweetgrass baskets and information for exhibition
When/Where: The Coastal Discovery Museum will host “Grass Roots: African Origins of an American Art” from September 2010 until early January 2011.
Info: This traveling exhibition traces the historic roots of the sweetgrass basket, the art-form through time, and the individuals who practiced the art of basket making. A number of demonstrations, lectures, presentations and activities are also planned. The museum is seeking assistance from the local community to find historic baskets made by Hilton Head Island basket-makers and information about this island’s basket-makers and their lives. This traveling exhibition is part of the National Endowment for the Humanities’ “On The Road” project. A larger version of “Grass Roots” is currently on display at the Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of African Art in Washington, D.C.

Poster Contest
When/Where: The winning poster will be accounced at the unveiling party Sept. 30 at ArtWorks in the K-Mart plaza in Beaufort.
Info: The Beaufort Film Society will hold a poster art contest for the 2011 Film Festival. The winner's artwork will represent the 5th Annual Beaufort International Film Festival in all event promotions. Contest rules and guidelines can be found at www.beaufortfilmsociety.org. Ten finalists will be announced Sept. 15. Prizes include $250 for first place, $100 for second place and $50 for third place.

ARTworks Afterschool
When/Where: Through Oct. 14
Info: Classes include:
- Performing Arts: Jenn Shand will lead this class for ages 9-12, a low key and a noncompetitive introduction to acting. Students will gain self confidence in their ability to express themselves as they learn the basic acting skills through drama activities such as role playing, story dramatization, pantomime, improvisation, and scene work.
- Visual Arts: Art that Moves with Kelly Davidson for ages 12-16. Students will learn about design, geometrics, color, focus and motion, as we hand build Kaleidoscopes and wind chimes. Using metals, reflective glass, colored glass and other objects, students will be fascinated by the moveable works of art they are able to create.
- Performing Arts: String Orchestra with Ami Rabinowitz for ages 9-14. Prepare two orchestra pieces in four parts for a performance while learning music theory and instrument skills. Students will learn a few new scales, warm-up exercises, and even some history about their instrument. This class is intended for the orchestra student with at least a year of strings class or private lessons.
- Visual Arts: Arts Sampler with Jada Gray, for ages 6-9. Students will learn about color, line and media to create Jasper Johns inspired artwork. Jasper Johns is a famous South Carolina American contemporary artist who works primarily in painting and printmaking. Thursdays beginning September 2nd thru October 14th
- Performing Arts : Circus Skills with JW Rone, for ages 10-15. Explore the exciting physical arts of juggling, balancing and clowning and their relationship to performance.
- Visual Arts: Fun Creations with Polymer Clay with Kelly Davidson, ages 6-9. This class provides students with a fun learning opportunity in polymer clay art while working on the projects they'll be proud to use or give as a gift. This class will help develop new interests and skills in the fun working environment. Students will learn how to mix colors, create textures, shape and cut and using clay techniques; and apply these to make pens, a mirror and a 3-D aquarium, all using colorful polymer clay.

When/Where: The two-day celebrity tournament will be played Saturday, Sept. 4 at the Robert Trent Jones Course in Palmetto Dunes and Sunday, Sept. 5 at Harbour Town Golf Links in the Sea Pines Resort.

An Evening of the Arts

Lions Big Band Concert

Info: The Fifth Annual Big Band Concert will feature the Stardust Orchestra and the Hilton Head High School Seahawk's Jazz Band.
