Kid's Creative Workshops & Arts Camp

Info: Picture This Gallery offers an ongoing children's' art program on Saturdays afternoons, led by gallery owner and artist in residence Mira Scott, along with visiting artists. Upcoming classes include drawing, painting, cartooning and sculpting. Future workshops on portraiture, perspective, still life in graphite, pastel and charcoal, printmaking, color theory, 3-D object art, and mosaic.

Summer Art Camp
When/Where: Through August 27 at S.P.A.C.E. Studios, 9 West Henry St. in Savannah
Info: The City of Savannah's Department of Cultural Affairs is now accepting registrations for its Summer Art Camp, which are comprised of 11 camp sessions that provide an introduction to painting, ceramics, metalwork, mixed media and performing arts in age-appropriate group settings:
- Sessions 1-10 are one-week full-day sessions open to children ages 6-12. These sessions run June 7-Aug. 20 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.;
- Session 11 is an introductory half-day camp open to children ages 4-6. This session runs Aug. 23 - 27 from 9 a.m. to noonA non-spoiling bag lunch must be provided daily for full-day sessions. There will be no camp the week of July 5. pace is limited and advance registration is required. Full payment is due upon enrollment. Credit cards, checks, money orders and cash are accepted.
Cost: Session 1-10 is $135 per child per session, which includes all materials, and Session 11 is $75 per child.

Adventures in American Art

Summer Arts Camp

Info: Mira Scott, gallery owner, will lead creative workshops and Saturday Art Camp for young artists. Scott, along with visiting artists, will instruct in various media, including drawing, painting, cartooning and sculpting. Drawing classes include learning basic art skills of composition, balance, scale, proportion, techniques of perspective and shading. Future workshops will include portraiture, perspective, still life in graphite, pastel and charcoal, printmaking, fused glass, pottery, color theory, 3-D object art and mosaic. For ages 8 and up.

Mixed Up Masterpieces Visual Arts Camp
When/Where: Ages 5-7 meet from 1-3 p.m. and ages 8-12 meet from 10 a.m. to noon July 19-23 at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina.
Info: Students will work in such mediums as painting, sculpture, printmaking, found objects and more. One or more new projects will be introduced each day culminating in a student exhibit on Friday.

Kids N Clay Camp
When/Where: Session 1 from 10 a.m. to noon and session 2 from 1 to 3 p.m. July 16 (glaze day) at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina
Info: Students, ages 6-12, will learn a variety of ceramic hand-building techniques, including pinch, slab, coil, surface decoration, glazing and more. Each student will complete at least four projects. Because of the drying ad firing time needed when working with this unique medium, students will attend camp for four days then return for glazing and surface decoration on the following Friday.

Summer Art Blast at ARTworks
When/Where: From 8 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. for 6- to 8-year-olds and from 1-5:30 p.m. for 9- to 12- year-olds July 12-August 13 in Beaufort Town Center
Info: ARTblast at ARTworks provides an opportunity for children from ages 6-12 to experience art from different times in history. Our goal is to help children establish a creative outlook on life and art while having fun. Schedule includes:
- July 12-16, "The Prehistoric Man: From Caves to Medieval Times": During this week students will learn the history of cavemen, Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Africans and medieval warriors. Students will be creating paintings inspired by cave paintings, ceramic pieces based on Greek and roman art, and also creating an African tribal mask.
- July 19-23, "The Renaissance and All Its Wonders": During this week students will learn about Renaissance artists like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Durer, and many others. Students will create a print inspired by Durer, a sculpture based on Michelangelo's art, and a group mural.
- July 26-30, "Express Your Inner Impressionist": During this week students will learn about Impressionist and Post- Impressionists artists, like Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, and Henri Matisse. Students will create a painting inspired by Vincent van Gogh's brush stroke, a collage inspired by Matisse, and a pastel drawing based on Monet's landscapes.
- August 2-6, "Surreal Surrealists and the Dada Movement,": During this week students will learn about the surrealist artists like Marcel Duchamp, Rene Magritte, and Salvador Dali. Students will experiment with the ideas of surrealism by creating paintings by pouring paint on a surface, experimenting with photography, and by creating an abstract sculpture.
- August 9-13, "Abstract Artist and their Abstractions,": During this week students will learn about abstract artists and color field artists like Jackson Pollack, Willem de Kooning and Helen Frankenthaler. Students will create a splatter painting, a portrait inspired by de Kooning, and will paint on raw canvas like Helen Frankenthaler.

Young Writers

Ceramics Camp

Info: Ceramics camp participants, rising 2nd-4th graders, will use clay, cement, plaster of paris and model magic to create! Make a bowl, a face, a stepping stone and characters — all of which will be painted and taken home.

Summer Conservatory Piano Class
When/Where: Full-day camp from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and half-day camp from 9 a.m to noon or from 12:30-3:30 p.m. during the following sessions at Hilton Head Preparatory Lower School's piano lab:

Info: Each session of this camp will include piano instruction and supervised practice for rising 3rd to 8th graders. The electronic, digitized piano lab will be used along with computer-assisted instruction in both theory and musicianship. 6th Annual Bobcat Tennis Camp
When/Where: Session III, July 5-9; Session I for 13-17 year-olds, from 8:30 a.m. to noon and Sessions II and III, 8:30-10:30 a.m. for 7-12 year olds and from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for ages 13-17
Info: The focus of these tennis camps is to provide a solid tennis skill foundation, and challenge the more experienced player to his/her next level. There is an underlying goal to direct players on a course to prepare them for success at high school or college tennis, or beyond. Participants will be taught in small group settings with a low student/coach ratio.
Cost: $110 each for ages 7-12, $135 for ages 13-17 and $195 each for Session 1 for players who represent their high school team or better.

Practicing With the Pros Football Day Camp
When/Where: July 10 at Hilton Head High School's football field. Registration is at 7 a.m., and the closing awards ceremony is at 1 p.m.
Info: This second annual one-day football camp is open to 300 area children ages 10-18. Led by Nevin McCaskill of the Tennessee Titans; Brian Johnson, formerly of the Baltimore Ravens; and a handful of other pro and college football colleagues, the camp will help young players learn and practice stances, terminology and drills
Cost: Pre-registration fee is $45; $55 day of the camp.

Summer Camp Style

Info: Girls ages 4-18 will experience a camp of fashion, fun and style. A strong emphasis is placed on building self-esteem and developing social graces. Campers will learn about the modeling industry, runway, photography, fashion trends, auditioning skills/tips and much more. Camps are divided into age-appropriate groups and promote individual natural beauty and talent. Camps are only one week.

Karma Kids Yoga Camp
When/Where: 1-2:30 p.m. July 2 at Dancing Dogs Yoga, 1600 Burnside St., Unit 106, in the Town Center behind the Hilton Garden Inn in Beaufort
Info: One week Series: Children (ages 6-10) will improve strength, flexibility and coordination through the practice of yoga poses. Children will learn to focus and center themselves using breathing and relaxation techniques. The camp also will teach self-respect and respect for others through our practice and non-competitive, group games and morality tales. Children will also learn basic anatomy.

Rec. Soccer Camp

Info: The featured instructor is Scott Manning B-License coach, all-star indoor league veteran, high school and college coach. Nate Skager, a local recreation and academy director of soccer, also will help instruct this camp. Skills covered include: 1v1 attacking moves, shooting, dribbling, passing and goal keeping. Additionally, camp will feature an assortment of fun soccer related games, such as “Soccer Tennis” and “Goalie Wars.” For girls and boys; all skill levels welcome; ages 5-14 grouped with other players of similar age, abilities and goals.

Camp Shell Hall
Seggie Tennis Academy
When/Where: Ages 5-10 meet from 8:30-10 a.m. and ages 11-14 meet from 10:30 a.m. to noon July 12-15 at Shell Hall.
Info: This camp is first come, first served and offers instruction for beginners and advanced beginners. Sessions are limited to the first 12 per time slot. Instructors include Di Seggie, who has been in the tennis business for more than 40 years with players of all levels, and Robert Brown, head tennis coach for boys and girls at Bluffton High School and local junior team coordinator.

Junior Sailing Program
When/Where: There are five sessions: July 12-23 and from July 26-Aug. 6; guppies meet from 9-11 a.m.; Learn to Sail, from 9 a.m. to noon; Intermediate and racers, from 1:30-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday June 1 to Aug. 6 at 10 Yacht Club Drive on Hilton Head
Info: The Junior Sailing Program offers four levels of instruction: Guppies is for 6-7 year-old swimmers and offers an introduction to basic seamanship, such as rowing, basic sailing, knot tying, navigation, as well as confidence on the water; Learn to Sail is for 8 to 17-year-olds with little to no sailing experience; Intermediate is for those with a minimum of four weeks prior sailing instruction and demonstrating skill and confidence in single-handing a dinghy; and Racing for those serious about racing.
Cost: Member tuition is $125 for guppies and $400 for other levels; and non-members are $175 for guppies and $550 for other levels. The four-day session is discounted at 20 percent. Deduct 5 percent for multiple sessions or multiple children. Scholarships are available.
Ja Elite Soccer
When/Where: From 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 12-16 at Hilton Head Preparatory School's Athletic Field. Drop off starts at 7:45 a.m. and pick-up is until 4:45 p.m.
Info: The JA Elite Soccer Camp is designed for campers ages 8 and older. From basic fundamentals to sophisticated skills, campers will be taught by full-time college and youth coaches from around the southeast. This full-day camp will consist of 31/2 hours of technical instruction and small-sided games in the morning along with indoor/outdoor games in the afternoon. All full-day campers will receive a T-shirt, a ball and lunch provided.

Ja Soccer
When/Where: 8:30 am-noon (drop-off starting at 7:45 am; pick-up until 4:45 pm) July 12-16 at the Hilton Head Preparatory Athletic Field
Info: This all ages half-day camp will consist of 31/2 hours of technical instruction and small-sided games in the morning. Campers will be released at noon. All half-day campers will receive a T-shirt.

Swimming & Tennis
When/Where: From 12:30-3:30 p.m. July 19-23 at the South Carolina Yacht Club. Transportation from Hilton Head Preparatory School to the Yacht Club is available.
Info: This combined swim and tennis camp features hours of fun yet structured activities. Swimmers, ages 5-12, of all levels will either learn or perfect freestyle, breast, butterfly and back strokes. Tennis lesson include: tennis fundamentals to fitness drills and tennis games, the rhythm of the “bounce/hit" and how to hit a volley, the ground stroke and serve. Intermediate and advanced players will keep the ball in play with the SCYC pro and games (both singles and doubles) will be offered.

Basketball Camp
When/Where: Session 2 runs from 9-11:30 a.m. July 12-16 at Hilton Head Middle School gym 6-8 pm
Info: Session 1 is for rising 2nd-7th grade and Session 2 is for rising 8th-12th grade. This coed camp will teach basketball skills including proper attitude, focus on defense and motivation. Man defense, man press, fast break, passing, self-help drills and the mental/emotional part of the game all will be featured. This camp will be split into two sessions with mornings devoted to drill work and the early evenings spent playing games.

Baseball Hitting Camp
When/Where: From 9 a.m. to noon July 19-23 at Hilton Head Preparatory School's Athletic Field
Info: Baseball Hitting Camp will focus on the fundamental offensive skills of the game for rising 1st-6th grade boys. Appropriate fundamentals of the baseball swing will be reinforced through individualized instruction and game and skill challenges will provide a fun way to reinforce skills taught during the camp.

Girls Health/Fitness/Nutrition
When/Where: From 9 a.m. to noon July 5-9 at the Hilton Head Preparatory School's Fraser Field House
Info: Today 12-16 year old girls face a variety of issues relating to their health and well-being. What better way to learn more about our bodies and ourselves than enrolling in this camp? Each day will emphasize a different type of exercise including cardio, boot camp training, weight training, yoga/pilates and stretching. Campers will receive exercise instruction along with the workout. Campers will discuss nutrition to help girls form and maintain good eating and exercise habits. They will learn to make better food choices and read food labels as well as discover how different foods affect us both mentally and physically.

Info: Join this high-powered camp for rising 3rd-8th grade girls and develop stick skills along with a tactical understanding of this popular game. The coaching staff will use a progression of drills to build campers’ skills in throwing, catching, cradling, scooping and shooting. Camp sessions will also include small-sided competitions along with full-field games.

Hilton Head Island Gymnastics
When: Registration begins April 1. Campers can choose between the following five time frames with various customized packages through Aug. 13:

Info: Children can enjoy gymnastics, free-play, arts and crafts, movies, music and ames. There will be a Sport Day with basketball, soccer, volleyball and many more indoor and outdoor activities. There also will be a Water Day once a week with a waterside.
Cost: There is a 10 percent off on packages if parents sign up between April 1 and June 4.
Daily rates are available for all times slots. Packages are also available for all times slots and can be customized for 20 days, 12 days, 8, days, or 5 days. All days in packages can be used throughout the summer; they do not have to be consecutive days. Transportation is also available for $1 per day; pick-up is at 8 a.m. and drop-off is at 5:30 p.m. at the parking lot of the Cross Island Medical Center. All meals are included in the cost.

Bluffton School of Dance & Performing Arts

Info: Handwriting requires well-developed coordination of both the hands and the eyes. Write On! goes beyond traditional handwriting programs by focusing on hand skills and the mechanics of writing, as well as the developmental progression of functional skills necessary for success. All Write On! groups incorporate the nationally recognized Handwriting without Tears® curriculum. The group includes activities to warm up the whole body, targeted visual/movement activities to strengthen eye-hand coordination, and activities for hand skill development.

Flying Legends

Info: This camp is geared toward second- to fifth-graders. Children will learn how an airplane flies; will explore the museum's new B-17; will experience how a bombardier, pilot and navigator did their jobs; and will learn what it's like to live like a POW, train as a spy and experience life as a kid during World War II.

Info: Today 12-16 year old girls face a variety of issues relating to their health and well-being. What better way to learn more about our bodies and ourselves than enrolling in this camp? Each day will emphasize a different type of exercise including cardio, boot camp training, weight training, yoga/pilates and stretching. Campers will receive exercise instruction along with the workout. Campers will discuss nutrition to help girls form and maintain good eating and exercise habits. They will learn to make better food choices and read food labels as well as discover how different foods affect us both mentally and physically.

Info: A staff of trained outdoor educators and naturalists lead these camps from June-August.
- Discovery Days: A camp for ages 7-10 that combines education with kayaking. Activities include interpretative beach walks, marsh paddles and games.
- Eco-Venture: Camp for ages 11-14 teaches the basics of kayaking while developing an understanding of the natural world through hands-on study of coastal ecology.
